Las Palmas is located in the northeastern part of the island of Gran Canaria, approximately 150 km west of the Moroccan coast in the Atlantic Ocean.

The city was founded in 1478 and until the seventeenth century was considered the de facto capital of the Canary Islands.
It is the home of the Canarian Ministry of the President, as well as half of the ministries and colleges of the Canarian government, as well as the Supreme Court of the Canary Islands.
The city was founded by Juan Rejon on June 24, 1478 and was called "Real de Las Palmas".
Rejon was the head of the invading Castilian army, which then went to war with the locals.
